The Norway Expedition is an intimate, ethical and deeply immersive Arctic experience.
Small groups, an authentic expedition vessel as a floating home, and the rare chance to witness orcas and humpback whales during one of the greatest natural events on Earth: the winter herring migration in the fjords of Northern Norway.
Every moment is different. Every day follows the rhythm of nature—not a rigid itinerary.
From November to January, millions of Norwegian spring-spawning herring gather in the northern fjords seeking shelter in the cold, deep waters.
Following these massive schools arrive dozens of orcas and humpback whales, spending the winter hunting together in fascinating, perfectly coordinated techniques.
During the expedition, you will:
- observe orcas and humpbacks in complete freedom
- photograph from the deck and from our stable dinghy, with constantly changing Arctic light
- snorkel with orcas (optional and only in ethical, calm conditions)
- live the fjords from the perspective of those who truly know them

How the Expedition Works
No Fixed Daily Schedule — Nature Leads the Way
In the Arctic, weather, wind, and wildlife activity dictate the rhythm.
For this reason, we do not use a day-by-day program.
A typical day may include:
- evaluating weather and herring reports
- navigating to the most promising areas
- observing hunting activity from the deck
- launching the dinghy for closer encounters
- possible snorkeling sessions (only when behavior & safety align)
- returning to sheltered fjords, editing photos, evening briefings
Each day is unique, shaped by nature—not by a scripted plan.
Participation Requirements
To ensure safety and comfort on board, this expedition is reserved for guests who are:
- in good physical and mental condition
- able to move safely on a boat and get in/out of the dinghy
- comfortable in cold environments
- respectful of wildlife and safety rules
- not significantly overweight, due to the physical demands of dinghy operations, cold-water gear, and balance on deck
For those who wish to snorkel with orcas:
- previous snorkeling or freediving experience is recommended
- you must feel comfortable in open water and in cold conditions

Pochi giorni prima di affrontare questo viaggio i pensieri sono stati diversi. È la prima volta nella mia vita in cui ho deciso di intraprendere un’esperienza di questo genere,da sola, sapendo solo che lo desideravo fortemente con tutta me stessa e, dentro di me, di essermi affidata alla persona giusta per farlo. Una volta lì, circondata dai fiordi Norvegesi, vedendo per la prima volta nella mia vita queste creature meravigliose nel loro habitat, la mente si é spenta. Nessuna paura, niente freddo, niente di niente. Mi sono subito sentita accolta da loro,con una tenerezza e una curiosità nei miei confronti che mi ha particolarmente sorpresa. Il silenzio ovattato del mare, rotto solo dai loro movimenti lenti, potenti e dai loro richiami, mi ha fatto sentire minuscola e allo stesso tempo incredibilmente viva. Ho provato stupore ed emozioni mai provate prima in vita mia. Inoltre, ho incontrato persone fantastiche che hanno reso tutto ció ancora più unico. Ammiro Gian Paolo per la sua capacità di avvicinarsi al mondo animale con rispetto, silenzio e umiltà, senza invadere, senza pretendere. Tutto ció ha permesso a noi partecipanti,di poter vivere questa esperienza con naturalezza.

I have had the luck of participating to the Norway Expedition earlier this year. What was clear from the beginning was that while some people may seek the adventure of the day, I wanted it to be genuine and with no rush. The option of spending a week around the Norwegian fjords looking for cetaceans gave me that extra safety net in knowing that I had quite some days to see orcas and whales where no one else would or could.
You can clearly tell Gian has done this for years and it’s therefore a trip built on past experience, knowledge, trust and perhaps even failure- in the end it’s Mother Nature that decides to manifest herself not the other way. Gian has all the aces in his pocket: the perfect boat, a hard working crew, the amazing service and the top notch gear on board that I was very lucky to wear on my days in the water.
This trip has been a blend of feeding frenzies and observing behavioral components of orcas and how each single one plays a role in the pod. We struck gold- 3 feedings in 3 days, however they were all different one from another. I will never forget the feeling of seeing a humpback come from the bottom of the sea right below me and pass in front of me. I will always remember how cool it has been to see orcas hunt by slapping herrings with their tails. The feedings were huge we had a total of 4 humpbacks and 100 orcas in these feedings- quality and quantity… my oh my! This is a testament of the legacy that Gian has built over time and will continue to build, I am sure of it. He deserves all the praises along with his entire team.
Thank you for your kindness, the laughters at the dinner table, the excitement rushing through the boat when we had majestic auroras at night. Although the one thing I am most grateful for is the help you gave me with photography, whether on land or underwater- in this case underwater mostly. This was my first time bringing a more serious underwater case for my reflex camera but as always you’ve shown me patience in both photographing and in post production as well.
I will cherish these moments forever!

Che dire su Norway Expedition… è davvero difficile trovare parole per descrivere un’esperienza così profonda e intensa!
Partiamo dal fatto che Gian Paolo ti fa sentire subito a tuo agio, che per chi come me era alla prima esperienza in un contesto del genere è un fattore fondamentale, per non parlare delle sue conoscenze sia marine che sul luogo, che ti accompagnano a vivere e capire al 100% i momenti che stai vivendo.
Insieme a lui c’è una crew fantastica e competente che ti aiuta, ti capisce e ti fa sentire parte di una famiglia.
Poi finalmente arriva il momento di andare giù nel profondo blu, lì il tempo si ferma, il freddo non si sente, le emozioni iniziano a lasciarsi andare ed è un mix talmente potente che mi ha completamente conquistato, lasciandomi letteralmente senza fiato.
Il bello di tutto questo è che avviene in maniera etica, rispettando gli animali e il loro habitat, cosa non facile al giorno d’oggi ma che dovrebbe essere un requisito fondamentale secondo me, quindi ancora complimenti!

È davvero difficile trovare le parole per descrivere quello che è stato questo viaggio.
Sono riuscito a realizzare il mio sogno di poter vedere da vicino e nel loro ambiente naturale le orche e le megattere.
Abbiamo anche avuto la fortuna di nuotarci insieme e non ho mai provato delle emozioni cosí forti in vita mia.
Ho deciso di affidarmi a Gian Paolo perché ero alla ricerca di un tour diverso rispetto a quelli turistici, un’esperienza vera e soprattutto etica, che mettesse sempre al primo posto gli animali.
Non potevo prendere decisione migliore e posso solo che consigliare di vivere un’esperienza del genere con Gian Paolo, diffidando da chi pensa solamente ai proprio interessi.
È difficile trovare le parole per raccontare quanto questa esperienza sia stata speciale. È stato un viaggio che ha il sapore della vera avventura: solcare il mare dei fiordi su una barca a vela, immersi in una natura autentica, e avere il privilegio di incontrare questi animali magnifici è qualcosa che resterà sulla pelle a lungo. Ogni giornata iniziava con l’attesa silenziosa in mare aperto e si concludeva con il cuore colmo di immagini che sarà impossibile dimenticare.
Il modo in cui la crew ha gestito la barca, il mare e soprattutto il rispetto per gli animali ha fatto davvero la differenza. Nessuna spettacolarizzazione, nessuna forzatura: solo tempo, pazienza e grande competenza, per permettere alle orche di avvicinarsi alle loro condizioni e ricordarci, in ogni momento, che gli ospiti eravamo noi. Questo approccio ha reso ogni avvistamento non solo emozionante, ma anche profondamente etico.
Un grazie enorme a tutto l’equipaggio: a Ronny, il nostro magnifico capitano; a Lorenzo, per la sua simpatia; a Eva, per il suo immancabile sorriso; e infine a Gian Paolo che, con la sua competenza e la sua grande conoscenza, ci ha guidati non solo nell’incontro con questi splendidi animali, ma ha condiviso con generosità esperienze e racconti.
Un grazie speciale anche a Manuele e Luca, compagni di viaggio ideali, con cui abbiamo condiviso risate, attese, meraviglia e quei silenzi carichi di emozione che solo il mare sa regalare. La loro presenza ha reso questa esperienza ancora più intensa e indimenticabile, trasformando una semplice vacanza in un’avventura da raccontare e, soprattutto, da ripetere insieme.
Questa non è stata solo una vacanza, ma un’esperienza che resterà tra i ricordi più belli di sempre. Certe emozioni non hanno prezzo e viverle in questo modo ci ha fatto venire voglia di ripartire subito.
