This tour is designed for those who want to immerse themselves in authentic nature, far from mass tourism, with a single goal: photograph brown bears in their natural environment during their peak activity period.
We will be transported by a private seaplane to a remote area of Katmai National Park, where we will set up our base camp for 5 nights. Every day we will hike along the river, following the rhythm of the light and wildlife activity, to document the bears during their salmon fishing.
These will be intense, wild, and authentic moments that will remain etched in memory — and in our photographs.
The brown bears of Katmai
The brown bears (Ursus arctos), also called grizzlies, are wild but accustomed to human presence in this area, which allows us to photograph them up close without disturbing them. In mid-summer, they are fully focused on salmon fishing, offering us exceptional photographic opportunities.
We will see a wide variety of individuals:
- Large adult males seeking dominance
- Mother bear and her cubs, including spring-born young
- Subadult bears, solitary or in groups
- Authentic natural behaviors at every time of the day
I have had the privilege to observe cubs born just a few months ago in every season I have spent in this area.

This tour is entirely focused on optimizing photographic opportunities.
We have no fixed schedules or strict limits: everything is adapted to the light, the bears’ behavior, and weather conditions.
The days are shaped around photography: if the light is good and the bears are active, we move. If it rains, we adapt. If the scene is unique, we stay as long as needed.
The landscape is magnificent and evocative, but landscape photography is not the main goal.
The bears are everything.
Optional extension
After Katmai, you can choose to extend the photo tour with 4 nights in Denali National Park, staying in a lodge immersed in nature. An opportunity to explore another icon of Alaska, where grand landscapes and wildlife (moose, caribou, wolves, and grizzly bears) will offer you new photographic emotions.
