Extraordinay Lofoten is a journey that combines various themes, a perfect combination of aesthetic ingredients, from the wild life, with its sea eagles, foxes, reindeers and elks, to the fairy-tale villages that mankind has managed to fit perfectly into the surrounding nature, and the perfect climatic conditions that fishermen have been able to exploit to create one of the world’s most famous fish markets, that of stockfish, with March being the month with the highest concentration of fishing.

This offers incredible possibilities to create real photo reportages. Nevertheless, the trip is also suitable for non-photographers, those simply looking for an experience that captures the lifestyle these beautiful islands have to offer during this time of year.

he Lofoten Islands lie above the Arctic Circle, and are a the favorite spot for cod fishing.

This itinerary will be a road trip between snow-covered roads and fishing villages, which we’ll drive through while enjoying the marvel Nature has to offer, all in one of the most spectacular areas of Norway.

Travel program

Departure from Italy according to schedule. Upon arrival in Evenes, pick-up of our rental cars and departure to the town of Harstad. Accomodation at the hotel and free dinner. After dinner, weather permitting, we’ll go out in search of the Northern Lights, strolling along the harbour quayside or driving away from the city lights, in super locations that I got to fully discover during these years of travelling in this fascinating land. Overnight in Harstad.

In the morning we set off in a southerly direction: we drive along beautiful snow-covered roads bordering fjords and through crazy landscapes. We’ll stop along the way to enjoy the fantastic picturesque views and have a free lunch. Arrival in Svolvær during the day and accommodation in our rorbuer, the typical fishermen’s cottages on the fjord. Free dinner. Tonight too, weather permitting, we will go hunting the Northern Lights in some of the most fascinating sight points of the area. Don’t forget your tripod, we will take some great photos. Overnight stay in a rorbuer.

Departure in the morning for a beautiful two-hour dinghy excursion to the most beautiful fjords of the Lofoten Islands, the Trollfjord, to observe the marvelous white-tailed sea eagles. We will be surrounded by a unique landscape, sailing in calm, mirror-like waters, where we will have the opportunity to take spectacular photos. At the end of the excursion, return to Svolvær and free lunch.

In the early afternoon, we start our trail on the Lofoten Route, passing, through beautiful scenery typical of Latitude 68° North. We will stop at several fishing villages, including Henningsvær and Stamsund, and then continue on to the outstanding Nusfjord. The journey then proceeds to the beautiful beach of Sandbotnen, and then again towards Hamnơy and Reine, the jewels of Lofoten. The accommodation is in the rorbuers and dinner’s on your own, maybe in one of the typical restaurants to taste some of the local dishes. Then hunt for the Northern Lights and overnight in the rorbuers.

Departure in the morning, weather permitting, for a beautiful trek leading us to Reinebringen, one of the Lofoten Islands’ most exclusive vantage points, from where we can enjoy a breathtaking view of the fjord (crampons are strongly recommended). The climb is not extremely demanding, we will reach the top of the trail after about an hour, and relax with a picnic lunch with spectacular views. Gentle return to Reine and departure around sunset for Å i Lofoten, the last fishing village in Lofoten, which will gift us with picturesque views for a nice photo session. Free dinner and return to Reine for an overnight stay.

Departure heading north, stopping at the beautiful beaches of Haukland and Unstad, where with a bit of luck we’ll be able to see professional surfers riding fantastic waves in the fascinating arctic scenery. Coffee/lunch stop along the way then departure to Henningsvær, the Venice of the North, where we will enjoy an excursion on a typical Lofoten boat for a sunset fishing trip. Once back, the chef will show us how to cook the cod and we will enjoy an excellent dinner. Overnight in the hotel.

Departure after breakfast towards the North, through breathtaking scenery. We will pass by Laukvik, on the West Coast, where we’ll see one of the most impressive cod drying kilns: tons of stockfish on wooden structures, with the Gulf Stream which makes this place perfect for this typical preparation. The journey then continues to reach Harstad in the evening; accommodation in the hotel and return of the rental cars. Free dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Embark at 7.45 in the morning on fjord ferry, which will take us from Harstad to Tromsø after approximately 6 hours of sailing (in case of cancellation, a fast ferry may be used, sailing time 3 hours). Arrival in Tromsó around 14:00, hotel accommodation and then out to discover the largest city in Northern Norway: the cable car will take us to the panoramic observatory, where we’ll admire an incredible view of the city. For those who want, at 18:00 we can go having fun with the snowmobile outside the city, or visiting a husky farm and try the experience of sledding while surrounded by a spectacular landscape under the Aurora Borealis (if the weather allows us to see it). Typical dinner around the fire (only for those participating at the late afternoon excursions) and return to the hotel for the night.

Transfer to the airport in time to board the flight back to Italy, with a bit nostalgia.
